Duke University and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill COPD Research Conference 2017
This daylong, continuing education symposium provides a wide range of current topics by leading experts discussing areas of clinical research in the COPD patient population. COPD is now the third leading cause of death in the US and requires a greater understanding of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of the disease through research. This program will cover many of the recent and upcoming clinical and epidemiologic studies in COPD. Research and clinical issues regarding overlap between COPD and other obstructive airway diseases will be addressed in several presentations and an interactive panel discussion.
Learning Objectives
The overall goals of this program are to enhance learner’s knowledge and their ability to incorporate evidence-based research into their investigative and practice settings. At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
1) Define and discuss the asthma/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease overlap syndrome
2) Review for the NHLBI’s Pulmonary Trials Cooperative RETHINC pragmatic clinical trial comparing roflumilast and azithromycin
3) Provide an update on the COPD Gene studies
4) Discuss the mechanisms and applications of radio-scintigraphy in assessing drug delivery and mucociliary clearance in obstructive lung diseases
5) Describe recent key clinical studies regarding COPD and its pharmacological management
6) Discuss strategies to undertake research in asthma/ COPD overlap syndrome
7) Describe the use of population research to characterize respiratory symptoms, obstructive airways diseases and obstructive sleep apnea
8) Discuss the methods and findings of the rural research study regarding COPD
