IBHC Sustainment Training: January 2015

Date/Time:  January 6, 2015  2-3:30 p.m. (EST)

When Masters and Johnson began their groundbreaking research on human sexuality in 1957, the foundation for a biopsychosocial approach to treating sexual dysfunction was established (Maier, 2013). Today the World Health Organization defines sexual health as “a state of physical, emotional, mental, and sexual well-being." The Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) primary care setting offers an opportunity to address basic sexual function problems. Relegating the care of all sexual dysfunction to specialty medical providers (urology or gynecology) or mental health providers (licensed sex therapists) presents a burden of cost, time and access on the Military Health System.  Incorporating this care within the PCMH model using Internal Behavioral Health Consultants (IBHCs) has proven effective.  This presentation will discuss assessment strategies for the IBHC associated with common sexual function problems and appropriate primary care level interventions.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Identify and differentiate among common sexual function problems presenting in primary care settings
  • Evaluate a patient using a brief biopsychosocial assessment model based on the factors contributing to sexual function problems
  • Select and apply brief evidence-based intervention strategies suitable within the four visit model for common sexual function problems
