The practice of inpatient medicine covers a complex and ever expanding set of medical conditions. In recent years the practice of inpatient medicine is being performed by a wider range of providers across multiple specialty areas. Hospitalists, nurse practitioners and physician assistants are the front line providers who are engaging in the clinical care, teaching, research and leadership in the inpatient setting. In an era where reimbursement is being tied to outcomes, adherence to evidence-based guidelines and best practices is essential. A variety of recent developments in the field of hospital medicine, including novel drugs, new devices, new forms of communication, new uses for older technology and changes in the process of care all necessitate ongoing efforts to improve hospital medicine education among clinicians.
