PREVENTION OF SURGICAL SITE INFECTION IN THE OPERATING ROOM 2.0

Surgical site infections (SSI) are serious complications of surgical procedures that can lead to devastating patient morbidity and death. Many SSI, but not all, are preventable with sensible practices that help mitigate the numerous factors that could contribute to an individual patient's risk. Between 2-5% of all patients undergoing surgery in the US will develop a SSI. This course is primarily intended for healthcare providers who work in the operating room setting. The course consists of video clips with audio, interactive activities, and questions. Participants will view each video and activity of a hypothetical hospital which has a high rate of SSI. They will identify the mistakes in infection prevention practice and complete the follow up questions. The course is meant to reinforce and teach basic principles and practices of SSI prevention in the OR and the encourage compliance with basic, guideline-driven infection prevention practices required and/or recommended by US regulatory and accrediting agencies, such as The Joint Commission. This educational training course is intended for any experiences staff member who assists in the care of a patient in the operating room setting, including surgery, nursing, and anesthesia staff. This is an update course for individuals who already have operating room experience. It is not intended for use by new hires.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand patient, procedural, and perioperative risk factors for SSI, recognize and correct common mistakes in infection prevention practices in the OR, and practice appropriate operating room attire and assist others in complying with recommended guidelines.
