Recognizing and Treating Opioid Misuse and Abuse 2021-2023

This online module provides interactive content to instruct clinicians in use of best practices for recognizing and treating OID in an effort to address the opioid crisis.  Practice recommendation form the CDC and other agencies are detailed and applied in a variety of patient contexts.  Case studies are included for practical application of best practice.

Target Audience

Clinicians with prescribing authority - MD, PA, NP, PharmD and students in these programs Also relevant to personnel who work in settings where controlled substances are used in pain management

Learning Objectives

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Quantify the prevalence of opioid misuse and abuse in populations on chronic pain therapy
  • Recognize problematic behaviors and rank the level of concern
  • Communicate with patients about discontinuing therapy that is unsave or not sufficiently beneficial
  • Taper opioid therapy effectively
  • Describe options for medication-assisted therapy (MAT)
  • Detail the effectiveness and challenges of naltrexone therapy
  • Explain the effectiveness and challenges of opioid agonist therapy
  • Find and utilize freely available resources for safe opioid prescribing and opioid use disorder in our state
