The overall goal of this activity is to provide a continuing education forum that highlights new evidence and practice guidelines that will enhance learners’ knowledge and competency in prevention and treatment of common manifestations of cardiovascular disease.  Through this program, participants will evaluate new therapeutic agents and results of recent clinical trials, novel diagnostic procedures, and emerging risk management interventions in order to improve patient outcomes and make informed changes to their medical practice with confidence.

ACCOMMODATIONS AND ROOM RATES

A block of guest rooms has been reserved at the Renaissance Asheville Hotel. Rooms are $189 per night, plus applicable taxes. The room block will be held until November 11, 2015, but may sell out prior to this date. CANCELLATION POLICY

All cancellation requests must be submitted in writing via email (christy.darnell@duke.edu). Registration cancellations received on or before November 7, 2015 will be fully refunded minus a processing fee of 5%. Cancellation requests submitted between November 8 and November 27, 2015 will receive a 50% refund minus a processing fee of 5%. Cancellation requests received on or after November 28, 2015 will not be refunded. In the event that the program is cancelled or postponed, we will not be responsible for any travel costs or expenses, including cancellation/change penalties assessed by airlines, travel agencies, or hotels.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe how to select patients with atrial fibrillation for treatment with newer anticoagulant agents and manage common clinical scenarios that may arise during treatment.
  • Describe evidence for use of P2Y12 antagonist agents and their respective features to selecting which agent to add to aspirin and the appropriate duration of dual antiplatelet therapy.
  • Identify key principals associated with high-sensitivity troponin assays and the potential opportunities and pitfalls associated with these.
  • Describe new AHA/ACC guidelines for treating dyslipidemia and the changing landscape of treatment options and apply the ACCF/AHA guidelines for managing hypertension.
  • Explain how novel CRT technologies can benefit patients, how to select patients for this therapy and which patient subgroups are still underrepresented in randomized clinical trials.
  • Identify patients for catheter ablation based on the latest data and recognize remaining gaps in knowledge on this procedure along with studies underway to address these.
  • Recognize challenges and treatment options associated with managing patients with CKD and AF and those with CKD who are at risk for SCD, as well as the current data and ongoing research in this area.
  • Describe the latest technological advances in cardiac rhythm devices, current data on which patients are most likely to benefit from devices, and advances to expect in the near future.
  • Review and discuss best practices for acute heart failure therapy, including acute treatment, management of HFpEF, and preventing rehospitalization.
