Duke Medicine Faculty Professionalism Training 2015

May 29, 2015 to May 30, 2015
Although many features distinguish a profession, one of the most important is responsibility for addressing “unnecessary variation,” including the conduct of its members. Unfortunately, leaders of health care institutions often do not have training in or strategies for promoting professionalism and professional accountability, and addressing behaviors that undermine a culture of safety. Without the proper tools, health care professionals seemingly tolerate a certain amount of unprofessional/unsafe behavior in their institutions. Behaviors that undermine a culture of safety by healthcare professionals is first and foremost a threat to quality of care and patient safety, while also affecting staff morale and increasing cost burdens to a healthcare organization. This seminar will acquaint organizational leaders with tools, strategies, and skills to address unnecessary variation, including behaviors that undermine a culture of safety, providing a comprehensive plan adaptable to all healthcare organizations. Furthermore, the methodology presented is an essential component of a plan to address The Joint Commission’s July 2008 Alert, Behaviors that undermine a culture of safety (http://www.jointcommission.org/assets/1/18/SEA_40.PDF).
