Duke Point-of-Care Ultrasound for the Perioperative Physician Hands-On Workshop
The goal of this course is to provide the participant with the basic knowledge and skill set required to understand and perform a focused ultrasonographic assessment of the following areas: 10 focused transthoracic echocardiography; 2) inferior vena cava; 3) lung: 4) airway; 5) optic nerve sheath; 6) FAST exam (focused assessment with sonography for trauma). This skill set will enhance the ability of the perioperative physician to make rapid, accurate point-of-care decisiions for ill patients.
Learning Objectives
Explain the indications, benefits and limitations of ultrasonography in the evaluation and risk assessment of the perioperative patient.
Discuss the physics of diagnostic ultrasonography and demonstrate how to manipulate the ultrasound settings to acquire the ideal images for perioperative assessment.
Describe the sonoanatomy relevant to the point of care evaluation of the perioperative patientincluding the heart, percardium, lung, pleura, vena cava, stomach, optic nerve, and abdominal structures related to the FAST examination.
