ENDURING - 15TH ANNUAL NC RESEARCH TRIANGLE PULMONARY HYPERTENSION SYMPOSIUM

  • This is a one-day symposium with a focus on fortifying the knowledge base of physicians and other allied health professionals involved in diagnosing and treating Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, keeping them abreast of the ever-changing diagnostic and treatment paradigms. The symposium will address issues as it relates to appropriate diagnostic procedures, proper treatment choices, and timing of referral for more advanced care to pulmonary hypertension centers for healthcare providers at the front lines of screening for and diagnosing Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH). It will also address consideration of advanced mechanical circulatory support and/or lung transplant when therapies are inadequate. An application will also be submitted for the live course.

Target Audience

  • Allied Health Professionals
  • Fellows
  • Nurses
  • Nurse Practitioners
  • Physicians
  • Physician Assistants
  • Pharmacists

Learning Objectives

1. Describe the diagnosis and clinical classification of Pulmonary Hypertension, according to the 6th World Symposium and recent ERS/ESC guideline updates, as well as the treatment options with respect to PAH-specific therapies.

2. Recognize and distinguish disease processes that may or may not respond to Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension specific therapy. These in part include PH associated with sarcoidosis, myeloproliferative diseases, sickle cell disease and chronic renal failure, among other forms of Group 5 PH. Case presentations will offer examples to think about the nuances and challenges of these populations in patient care.

3. Early detection and screening are key in improving PAH disease course, outcomes and mortality. Recognize current and emerging tools, as well as gaps and opportunities to enhance the screening, detection and ultimate diagnosis of PAH. 4. PAH therapies are generally costly and can represent significant financial burden and challenges in access to a number of patients. Recognize the challenges and potential solutions to improve access to therapy despite costs, including but not limited to the role of clinical coordinators, patient advocacy organizations, and patient foundation funds.

5. Imaging of the right ventricle is key in assessing patient status and response to treatment of PAH. Recognize current and emerging imaging modalities to specifically characterize right heart size, morphology, and function.

6. CTEPH represents a unique group of PH in which the appropriate therapy may not clear in many patients. Review and recognize the current diagnosis and treatment paradigms in CTEPH. Specifically, be able to describe patient characteristics based on recent registry data, as well as indications for and outcomes of medical therapy, pulmonary thromboendarterectomy and balloon pulmonary angioplasty for CTEPH.

7. Through a series of cased based presentations, gain a deeper understanding and recognition of nuanced clinical situations in which the role and management of PAH therapy can be challenging to determine and navigate. Learn approaches to manage these patient scenarios from PH center expert clinicians.

8. Learn the indications for and role of advanced mechanical circulatory support options for patients with right ventricular failure that is refractory to conventional PAH therapeutics.
