SPECIAL CARE FOR PREGNANT HEARTS

  • Members of the Duke pregnancy heart team will educate referring providers about the comprehensive resources available to address cardiovascular risk factors in pregnant patients and those planning to become pregnant.

Learning Objectives

  • To recognize the current state of maternal cardiac disease in the US and NC and why this problem matters for obstetric, anesthesia, cardiovascular, and primary care providers.
  • To understand key principles for optimizing women’s cardiovascular health prior to pregnancy.
  • To provide the community with the tools to identify patients who could benefit from pregnancy heart team approach in the obstetric care and post-partum care.
  • To highlight the role of pregnancy heart teams in the care of pregnant people with cardiac disease.
  • To recognize the importance of postpartum care. To define adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) and understand their role in long term cardiovascular health.
  • To design appropriate termination or delivery care plans: location, timing and mode of delivery, hemodynamic goals, method of anesthesia, monitoring, access and post care.
  • To compare and contrast the risks and benefits of vaginal vs. cesarean delivery and neuraxial vs. general anesthesia in women with cardiac disease and develop plans for hemorrhage prevention and management in the setting of cardiovascular disease.
