Internal Behavioral Health Consultation Services: Why Manage Suicide in Primary Care?

Arlington, VA US
June 3, 2014

IBHC Sustainment Training: June 2014

Date/Time:  June 3, 2014; 2-3:30 p.m. (EDT)

Studies find that 45 percent of people who die by suicide visited their primary care provider within the month preceding their death. Suicide statistics are even higher within the Defense Department. Internal Behavioral Health Consultants serve as a vital resource to the primary care team to guide management within primary care. Contrary to widely held assumptions and practice habits in the mental health field, accurate suicide risk assessment, appropriate intervention, and disposition determination are feasible within a brief primary care appointment. Participants will learn to identify, assess and evaluate patients with a potential risk of suicide within the team-based Patient Centered Medical Home model.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Explain the difference between suicidal ideation and nonlethal morbid ideation
  • Compare and contrast the roles of specialty behavioral health and primary behavioral health in addressing suicide according to the chronic disease model
  • Evaluate how a sample crisis response plan would differ from a safety contract
