Integrating Spirituality into Patient Care

This 5-part educational series is designed to train health professionals on how to integrate spirituality into patient care as part of the practice of “whole person” medicine.   The first video is an overview and summary of the series, and is designed specifically for physicians.  The second video, also designed for physicians, focuses on past research linking religion/spirituality to mental, social, behavioral, and physical health, which forms the rationale for this approach; it also reviews research documenting the spiritual needs that patients have, the consequences of not addressing those needs, and mental and physical health outcomes that result when physicians address spiritual needs.  The third video, also designed for physicians, examines in detail “how to” integrate spirituality into patient care in a way that minimizes physician time and utilizes a team approach.   The fourth video is designed for nurses and practice managers and focuses on the spiritual care coordinator, who serves as the coach of the “spiritual care team” and orchestrates the addressing of patients’ spiritual needs.  The fifth video is designed for the entire spiritual care team and describes how team members work together to accomplish the common goal of practicing whole person care, with a focus on the role of the chaplain and the social worker.  After viewing this 5-part series, physicians and their staff will be prepared to identify and address the spiritual needs of patients in a comprehensive, competent, and time-efficient manner.
