Pain Management for Cancer, Palliative Care and End of Life

April 29, 2016 to May 1, 2016

Enhanced continuing education and training are needed for physicians and health care professionals to address gaps in knowledge and competencies underlying the performance and patient outcomes regarding the detection, treatment of cancer pain.  There is limited, if any, postgraduate live educational activities in the region regarding the treatment of pain for cancer patients as well as the options for palliative care and end-of-life pain management.     The 2016 Duke Pain Meeting is a multidisciplinary approach to care with a focus on cancer pain, palliative care and end of life.  The IOM, in its 2011 report, called for a “population health-level strategy for pain prevention, treatment, management, education, reimbursement and research”.  This live activity addresses this call to action by providing the education to the medical professionals charged with the care of cancer pain patients in North Carolina and beyond.

Learning Objectives

-Identify and treat pain in a cancer patient using an individualized, multi-disciplinary regimen comprised of behavioral, pharmacological, interventional, complimentary and palliative options as indicated.

-Provide Decision-making strategies that consider opioid and non-opioid pharmacologic options for the management of pain.

-Employ key behavioral diagnostic tools for pain patients and families who are caring for these patients during cancer treatment, for palliative care, and at end of life.
