The overall goal of this program is to enhance learners’ knowledge and improve their competency in the evaluation and treatment of patients with valvular heart disease and congenital heart disease, including aortic stenosis, mitral regurgitation, pulmonary valve disease and atrial septal defects. Topics include open surgical and transcatheter aortic and pulmonary valve replacement, open surgical and transcatheter repair for patients with mitral valve regurgitation, gross anatomy of valvular heart pathology and comparison with anatomic evaluation using CT angiography. Risk assessment, FDA approved as well as investigational treatments will be discussed. Direct exposure and discussion of patient cases will be afforded during the symposium.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize treatment options available to patients with aortic, mitral and pulmonary valve disease.
  • Discuss clinical risk assessment and use online surgical risk calculators for quantifying the risk.
  • Discuss the treatment advantages of specific treatment options for these valve diseases.
  • Describe the recent data from the ACC 2016 meeting regarding the treatment of aortic stenosis patients at intermediate risk for surgery.
  • Recognize clinical research protocols for 2016 including the treatment protocols for low surgical risk patients with aortic stenosis.
