IBHC Sustainment Training: October 2014

Primary care clinics provide psychotropic medication management to a significant portion of patients in treatment for mental health conditions. The first-line medications prescribed for mild to moderate depressive and anxiety disorders are generally well tolerated and have few serious side effects; but other medications, such as older antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and antipsychotics, have the potential for serious adverse effects and medical complications. The presenter will review the major classes of psychotropic medications and discuss medications commonly prescribed in the primary care setting, including indications, dosages and typical side effects.  He will also discuss indications and issues specific to medications typically prescribed by specialty mental health providers, which may be of interest in a primary care environment.
 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

• Recognize the names of serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) medications and discuss common acute and ongoing side effects of SSRIs
• Categorize some typically used psychotropic medications as either anticonvulsants (used for bipolar disorder) or antipsychotics (used for treatment of schizophrenia)
• Describe the metabolic syndrome associated with second-generation antipsychotic medications
