2018 Duke Solid Organ Transplant Summit

October 6, 2018

Emerging research has led to opportunities to improve care of solid organ transplant patients, however, many practicing physicians who treat these patients do not have a full understanding of the implications of these research results to their practice. Current Knowledge: There have been a number of recent advancements in the area of solid organ transplant. Broadly, evolving research has shown promising results around complication reduction through continuous management of immunosuppressant therapies in post- operative transplant patients. Additionally, new research around transplanting organs to patients or from donors who are HCV or HIV positive has stirred public and scientific debate and requires provider understanding in order to make appropriate treatment decisions. New research around specific solid organ transplant is also emerging.  There are expanding options for hte management of hepatocelluar carcinoma in relation to liver transplant, and continuous insight into the impact of microbiomes on advanced lung disease that have potential to impact theraputic decision making. These advanceds in additon to other controversial issues, emerging techniques and future directions in the area of solid organ transplant require provider education focused on providing evidence-based tools, treatment, and care strategies to achieve better team-based clinical care and patient outcomes.
