2019 Batten Disease: A Flag Ship Disorder At the Cutting Edge Pediatric Medicine
The goals of this symposium are the following. 1) To describe the manifestations of Batten disease in it various forms. 2) To review the genetic causes and underlying pathophysiology if Batten Disease. 3) To review currently available and promising emerging therapies for its various forms including small molecules, bone morrow transplantation, cell therapy, and virus mediated gene therapy. The symposium will illustrate how cutting -edge advances in pediatric medicine in various pediatric sub specialties are illustrated in this disease. Attendees will be able to at the end of the course to identify and diagnose patients with various forms Batten disease, to counsel patients about the causes and therapies and to refer patients for appropriate treatments with various sub specialists. They will also be able to understand basic principles underlying our growing understanding of this disorder and how this could apply to other unrelated but similarly challenging pediatric disorder.
