2019 Harriett Cook Carter

The Harriet Cook Carter annual lectureship was endowed to commemorate the contributions of Harriet Cook Carter, a friend of the School, whose community service enriched the lives of Durham residents. The purpose of the lecture is to provide an opportunity for a scholar to address an important contemporary issue for a broad audience of faculty, students, and members of the Duke and Durham communities.

Target Audience

Faculty, Staff and students from Duke University, including the schools of Nursing, Medicine, Law, Policy & Sociology. Health Providers from Duke Health. Members of the VA and Durham Community.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss history of rape trauma and the neurobiology of rape-related PTSD
  2. Use a case-method to illustrate the types of sexual trauma throughout the life cycle
  3. Develop treatment models for victims and legal outcome alternatives for offenders
