6th Annual Duke Valve Symposium

The overall goal of the activity is to enhance learners’ knowledge and improve their competency in the evaluation and treatment of patients with a valvular and congenital heart disease.  Topics include detailed evaluation of these patients including 3D TEE, cardiac CT and MR imaging.  Treatment strategies ranging from open surgical repair to transcatheter treatments will be discussed, including currently enrolling clinical trials.  Recent randomized trials including REDUCE and COAPT will be reviewed.  Lunchtime sessions will include hands on anatomy workshops, imaging workshops, structural heart disease coordinator workshops and informal review of challenging cases.

Cardiologists and healthcare providers who care for patients with structural/valvular heart disease

Learning Objectives

  1. Recognize treatment options available to patients with valvular and structural heart disease
  2. Discuss clinical risk assessment and use online surgical risk calculators for quantifying risk
  3. Discuss the treatment advantages of specific treatment options for these structural heart diseases
  4. Define the clinical changes being implemented based on the recent randomized clinical trials
  5. Identify the investigational treatment options to patients in 2019
