Appropriate antibiotic prescribing for outpatient pediatric acute respiratory tract infections (ARTI)

In support of improving patient care, Duke University Health System Clinical Education and Professional Development is accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), to provide continuing education for the health care team. The designation was based upon the quality of the educational activity and its compliance with the standards and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Program Description: This presentation will: (1) highlight high-yield antimicrobial stewardship principles, (2) describe current guidelines and data related to diagnosing and managing pediatric ARTIs, and (3) introduce communication strategies to improve antibiotic prescribing while maintaining patient satisfaction. The content for this enduring course will be in a PowerPoint format. The PowerPoint will live on our SharePoint site. DUHS prescribers will be able to log in our SharePoint site using their Duke NetID to complete this course.

Learning Objectives

Explaining principles of outpatient antibiotic stewardship as they apply to pediatric practice, including the impact of overprescribing on individual and public health.

Selecting appropriate first-line antibiotics, dosages, and treatment durations for common pediatric acute respiratory tract infections, such as acute otitis media, streptococcal pharyngitis, and acute bacterial sinusitis, based on current clinical guidelines and evidence.

Describing evidence-based communication strategies to help parents understand when antibiotics are not effective while still maintaining satisfaction with care.
