IBHC Sustainment Training: February 2015

Assessment and effective treatment of a headache disorder in primary care requires more than a diagnosis; there must also be consideration of the impact of the disorder on the patient’s life and lifestyle.  A primary-care based Internal Behavioral Health Consultant (IBHC) is ideally suited to conduct such a task. By expanding on the recommended primary care behavioral health model of integrated care assessment with headache-specific questions, IBHCs would apply the biopsychosocial model for both accurate assessment and creation of impactful treatment plans. The goal of this presentation is to review the most common headache patient presentations in the primary care setting, to compare and contrast their diagnostic criteria, and to review possible primary care-based treatment options.  While behavioral treatments for headaches can include a wide array of intervention strategies, ranging from relaxation to biofeedback, the emphasis of the discussion will be treatment goals that utilize self-management skills taught in the primary care behavioral health four-session modality.

• Incorporate tracking tools to evaluate treatment outcomes
