Blank Space, Empty Adrenals: A Deep Dive into the Causes and Treatments of Adrenal Insufficiency
Adrenal insufficiency, whether primary or secondary, is a critical condition that can lead to life-threatening adrenal crises if not properly managed. This course will cover the pathophysiology of adrenal insufficiency, including drug-induced causes, and the role of pharmacists in identifying, preventing, and treating these conditions. Pharmacists will gain insights into the physiological mechanisms behind adrenal insufficiency, with a particular focus on how medications—such as corticosteroids, antifungals, and chemotherapeutic agents—can interfere with adrenal function. Participants will also learn how to recognize signs of an impending adrenal crisis, the clinical interventions necessary to stabilize patients, and how to educate patients on proper medication use and lifestyle modifications to prevent future crises.
