CARDIO ONCOLOGY IN THE ERA OF PRECISION MEDICINE
As new anti-cancer treatments enter the treatment arena, as a larger number of people are living longer with or after cancer, and as an aging population presents more often with co-morbidities at diagnosis, cardiovascular disease has emerged as a major cause of morbidity and mortality for cancer patients. In response, the field of cardio-oncology, an intersection between cardiology and oncology, has been established to strengthen the often complex and multifaceted care of the patient with both cancer and cardiology diagnoses. As valuable members of a multidisciplinary team, health care providers in primary care, oncology, and cardiology need to learn to assess, recognize, and manage cardiovascular risk factors and disease in patients with cancer.
