CORE CONCEPTS OF HLD AND STERILIZATION 4/3/2026
This course is designed for use by Infection Preventionist (IP) trainees, whose credentials might be RN, BSN, MSN, MT, or something else as designated by their employer. Many people who are hired as IPs receive very little formal education on the incredibly important concepts of cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization in the hospital and/or clinic environment.This course is taught by the Duke Infection Control Outreach Network (DICON) IP team. TheDICON IPs are considered experts in their field, and spend the majority of their time advising and guiding IPs at small rural hospitals in their infection prevention and control efforts.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will know the differences between cleaning,disinfecting, and sterilization,
they will be able to verbalize the processes for pre-treatment and transport of dirty instruments,
they will understand the workflow of the instrument processing environment,
and they will be familiar with specific cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing processes in hospital and clinic settings.
