DCN INTRODUCTION TO CLINICAL RESEARCH 2026

The course is designed to provide education focused on the history and purpose of clinical trials and applicable regulations, to provide education and discussion on the roles of the healthcare team in clinical research and to assist in the understanding of the processes related to best practices, financial components and monitoring of clinical trials. The course is appropriate for healthcare professionals new to clinical research and for those wanting a refresher of basic concepts or an update on best practices. Content will be delivered using live virtual sessions.

The course material will be delivered 1/month for 6 months. The dates of the course will be 7/29/26, 8/19/26, 9/23/26, 10/21/26, 11/18/26 and 12/16/26. A course evaluation will be conducted at course end.

This is a private course; this course is not taking additional attendees.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the history and purpose of clinical trials
  • Describe important ethical and regulatory aspects of conducting research and the relationship to informed consent requirements
  • Discuss the role of the investigator, the institution, and the need for standard operating procedure when engaged in human subjects research
  • Describe best practices in investigational agent and device management
  • Discuss financial components of clinical trials and compliant research billing
  • Discuss eligibility, patient safety and practical issues of conducting clinical trials in oncology and cardiology outpatient settings and describe data management requirements for clinical trials
  • Describe the various types of audits and monitoring visits, how to prepare for an announced visit, and how to respond to a request for an audit from the federal government
  • Discuss practical issues in regulatory compliance and current regulations that guide clinical trials as well as issues related to cooperative group research (ie: NCI sponsored)
