Department of Anesthesiology Workshop in Implicit Bias-June 18

June 18, 2019

The goals of the workshop are to help nurture a culture of inclusion that allows us to maximize the effectiveness with colleagues and health care teams, improves patient-health care provider communication and improves relationships and patients' perceptions of care, thus improving the quality of care provided to patients. The learning objectives of the workshop include: • Increase the understanding of implicit bias, how it differs from explicit bias and how it develops • Identify the different forms/types of bias and their impact on decision making • Increase the understanding of how societal norms influence and reinforce particular implicit biases • Deepen the understanding of personal implicit biases • Gain an understanding of significant research related to the impact of implicit bias on assessment, selection and decision making processes • Discuss strategies to decrease implicit bias, especially as it relates to interactions with patients, colleagues/peers and other key constituents The goals and learning objectives will be accomplished through a didactic portion, activities including the Implicit Association Test, and small group discussions led by Judy Seidenstein (Chief Diversity Officer of Duke University) and Benjamin Reese (Vice President, Office for Institutional Equity at Duke University), who have led similar workshops for other departments.
