DRAH HM Vital Talks with Palliative Care (October 23, 2019)
VitalTalk is an evidence-based program which makes communication skills for serious illness learnable. The program equips clinicians with proven strategies for responding to difficult conversations. Our half-day, four hour introductory course uses small-group skills practice supported by expert supervision and feedback. A short introduction and initial didactic presentation (30 min) will be followed by intensive skills practice with specially trained simulated patient actors. In particular, for the training of DUke Raleigh staff, we will use relevant cases and focus on the specific skills for Goals of Care conversations. The method is culturally sensitive and oriented around patient values. VitalTalk’s verbal tools empower clinicians to communicate about serious illnesses empathetically and effectively, also enabling them to feel less burned out in the process. Results from the trainings are immediate, significant, and promote lasting improvements in a medical practitioner’s ability to meet patient and family needs around serious illness.
