DRH 4-23-19 8:45-11:15 Duke Health: Empathy, Belonging & Cultural Education

April 23, 2019

The newly re-designed and innovative staff diversity education curriculum will provide attendees with a new and timely awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion (D&I), cultural competence, implicit bias, microaggressions, and the utility of the CultureVision tool to meet our core value implementing culturally competent and safe care. At the end of every section, attendees are given cultural toolkit action items to assist them with developing a personal diversity plan. The curriculum will further offer innovative adult learning techniques with a menu of visual case studies customized to speci c learning modules on people with disabilities, implicit bias, LGBTQIA+ populations, identity, cross cultural communication, and generational diversity. As with Duke’s current RELATE training, attendees are reminded that communication is 7% verbal with the remaining as body language. With Cultural Competence as a Joint Commission Standard, emphasis will be placed on cross cultural communication with respect to differences in generational communication, culturally appropriate and inappropriate body language, and cultural resources, and understanding with utilization of the CultureVision tool and resources via the Of ce for Institutional Equity's (OIE) online Toolkit.
