DUCHENNE AND BECKER ADULT CARE PRE CONFERENCE

  • Advancements in the care and research of Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy have resulted in individuals living with these diagnoses living longer lives. Pediatric institutions across the country have built comprehensive and coordinated neuromuscular programs to care for these patients. However, the adult care of people living with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy is often fragmented and difficult to find and access. PPMD is hosting a meeting alongside key healthcare professionals to dive into transition of care through adulthood and elements to make caring for this cohort of patients optimal through the lifespan.

Learning Objectives

  • Discussing the patient experiences of adults living with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy to learn about their journey accessing care and resources
  • Discuss elements of transition of care planning for patients living with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystroph
  • Discussing available supportive resources such as occupational therapy, federal and state benefits, financial planning, and other necessary assistance that may be available to adult patients with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy.
  • Discussing the nuances of transfer and transition of care for patients living with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy.
  • Discussing the importance and mechanisms of collaboration among subspecialists who care for adult patients living with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy.
  • Discussing the physical, psychological, emotional, social, and spiritual components of care that can be provided by palliative care services to adult patients living with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy.
  • Discussing coping tools and resources to overcome compassion fatigue and burnout in healthcare professionals who care for patients living with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy.
  • Discussing a case study of a successful transition program for patients living with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy.
  • Discuss the elements of an ideal model of a neuromuscular care center for adult patients living with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy.
