Essential Musculoskeletal Assessment for Physicians, Nurses & Physician Assistants
The musculoskeletal system can create, influence, and mimic many symptoms experienced in the pelvic region. As a result, it can be difficult to accurately diagnose and treat pelvic conditions. Upon completion of this course attendees will have an in depth understanding of how the musculoskeletal system impacts many pelvic dysfunctions and will learn skills for accurate MSK system assessment and treatment. These skills will be learned in lab sessions utilizing live models. In addition case study presentations and didactic presentations will enhance the learning process. Specifically designed for physicians, nurses and physician assistants this course will help the participant gain an in-depth understanding of how a pelvic health physical therapist assesses pelvic conditions and develops interventions. The course will begin with an introduction to the pelvic health physical therapy specialty and continue with a description of the principles of assessment and treatment for pelvic floor conditions. An interactive lab session will follow in the afternoon that will include guided assessment of the internal anterior pelvis, again with live pelvic models. Methods for finding a qualified Physical Therapist will be discussed. The goals of the course include: 1) enhanced understanding of the skills required for an accurate pelvic assessment both internally and externally; 2) The participants will be able incorporate valuable musculoskeletal assessment skills upon return to their practice; 3) increased awareness of the many components of Physical Therapy practice; 4) improved communication between practitioners and; 5) strengthen practitioners ability to build an interdisciplinary care team that will improve outcomes for their patients.
Target Audience
MD, RN, AP, PA, (Fellows and residents ) with in many disciplines including but not limited to: OB/GYN, urogynecology, urology, family medicine, internal medicine, orthopedics and gastroenterology.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Identify and master at least 3 basic external assessment skills necessary for assessing musculoskeletal pelvic conditions.
- Explain how key muscle groups, both internal and external pelvic and core, are involved in pelvic floor conditions.
- Analyze pelvic alignment and posture throughout the pelvic region in order to improve accuracy in assessment of pelvic conditions.
- Accurately explain key components of pelvic physical therapy treatment in order to improve communication between practitioners.
- Discriminate between practitioners who are qualified to perform quality pelvic floor physical therapy.
- Accurately identify at least 4 specific pelvic floor and hip muscles, during an internal vaginal assessment, and relate how these muscles can impact patient’s symptoms.
