Evidence-Based Oral Care in Oncology
In support of improving patient care, Duke University Health System Clinical Education and Professional Development is accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), to provide continuing education for the health care team. The designation was based upon the quality of the educational activity and its compliance with the standards and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Program Description: Once monthly 1 CME credit hour events directed toward advanced practice providers as well as pharmacists and registered nurses who care for all patients treated at Duke Cancer Institute.

Learning Objectives
- Describing the principles of basic oral care in oncology patients and understand their role in preventing and managing oral complications during cancer treatment.
- Reviewing evidence-based guidelines for the prevention and management of oral mucositis
- Identify causes and clinical features of xerostomia in oncology patients and apply strategies for symptom management.
- Recognizing the risk factors, staging, and prevention strategies for medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) in patients receiving antiresorptive and antiangiogenic agents.
- Explaining the spectrum of oral toxicities associated with targeted cancer therapies
- Applying current MASCC/ISOO clinical practice guidelines to optimize oral health and improve quality of life in oncology patients.
