This course will provide an overview of principles and concepts of information technology with a focus on healthcare systems used in the healthcare setting and the industry seeking to serve these uses.

Learning Objectives

1. Explain the definition of biomedical informatics and data-information-knowledge frameworks. Understand the different disciplines within biomedical informatics. 

2. Understand the attributes and functions of electronic health records and how they affect patient safety, quality of care, organizational efficiency, data sharing, and provide return on investment (ROI).  

3. Define and discuss major barriers to adoption of electronic health records and other health information system technologies/systems. 

4. Understand the challenges of building/using/integrating clinical decision support systems. 

5. Describe the purposes, functions, and attributes of computerized provider order entry systems and understand the problems and advantages of these systems. 

6. Describe the fundamental requirements of a decision support system and how clinical practice guidelines and evidence-based practice inform these systems. 

7. Describe how health information technologies can contribute to errors and safety issues and how IT can effectively be used to decrease medical errors. 

8. Discuss the primary applications of patient monitoring systems and how they can be used to improve the quality of health care. 

9. Understand the major types of specialty IT systems. 

10.Examine the role of administrative systems, their integration with clinical information systems, and their impact on resources and efficiency. 

11.Examine the roles, process, storage, and management of imaging systems and understand the economic and technological factors considered in the adoption of these systems. 

12.Discuss the importance of human computer interaction and usability in health care information systems and how health information systems need to support the cognitive functions of individuals and organizations in health care organizations. 

13.Discuss the roles and challenges of consumer health informatics applications and technologies. 

14.Understand the role of personal health records/patient portals. 

15.Understand the importance of an implementation and maintenance plan for healthcare information systems including their impact on operations, clinical, and economic outcomes. 

16.Understand the key aspects of public health informatics. 

17.Describe broadly how data standards are important to the use of clinical data. 

18.Understand new and emerging health information technologies and their potential impact on clinical care and quality of care.
