INSERTION OF CENTRAL VENOUS CATHETERS 3.0

  • This course is primarily intended for health care providers who insert central venous catheters (CVCs). There is a separate course available from Duke Infection Control Outreach Network (DICON) for nurses who are involved in the care and maintenance of CVCs.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize appropriate indications for a CVC.
  • Place central lines utilizing pertinent aseptic technique and infection control guidelines and confirm proper placement.
  • Apply appropriate catheter care once the catheter is inserted.
  • Identify and manage complications associated with central line insertion.
  • Recognize when to remove the CVC.
