IPE Faculty development to avoid the tragedy of miscommunication at end of life
We are focusing on important topics of patient centered care, communication, and empathy in a sensitive time in someone's life. A half day event where an interprofessional group will come together to learn how to work as a team, and then teach learners as families and patients make end of life care decisions. Will include group icebreaking communuication activity, panel discussion, simulation with standardized patients followed by small group discussions with end of day reflection.
Target Audience
Faculty from the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, PT, PA and programs. UNC faculty from these schools as well as Social Work, chaplains, hospital nursing, palliative care team members.
Learning Objectives
1. Acknowledge the varied emotions that learners may exhibit.
2. Give space for learners (and debriefers) to breathe; take a moment for everyone to ground themselves in the present moment after the simulations.
3. Use tools learned today to include in your teaching in your current educational setting.
4. Consider the benefits of interprofessional collaboration when discussing end of life issues.
