NATURAL LANGUAGE ACQUISTION (SPEECH PATHOLOGY CLINICAL EDUCATION SERIES)

February 7, 2023
  • A gestalt language processor is a speaker that hears, stores and uses chunks of whole language prior to having knowledge or awareness of it’s internal structure. Gesalt language processing is one type of language learning where a child acquires gestalts as their initial language units which they then break down, change, and manipulate into novel utterances over time. . In Marg Blanc’s book, Natural Language Acquisition on the Autism Spectrum: The Journey from Echolalia to Self Generating Language, she expanded these four stage to six stages adding stages for advanced grammar and recommends a language sampling protocol to track a gestalt language learner’s language development. Applying the concepts of Natural Language Acquisition to gestalt learners aligns with the neurodiversity affirming movement as it focusses on and values how different individuals learns (e.g. echolalia). The key differences with this model compared to a more traditional analytic processing approach are the approach to assessment and language units targeted. This inservice will address assessment, identification of stages, treatment planning, and goal writing for working with gestalt language learners.
