Pre-Conference Session 3: The Power of a Healthy Team Dynamic: Reducing Conflict & Empowering Tomorrow's Leaders

San Diego, CA US
June 20, 2018

When it comes to navigating the road to “zero harm” in healthcare, the team dynamic is an indisputable factor affecting patient safety. As important as clinical knowledge and technical skills are, the team members’ ability to collaborate, employ emotional intelligence with teammates, and be empowered to contribute to a common goal are equally essential.  A proactive focus on team formation, addressing conflict and empowering each team member can steadily improve team performance and patient safety.

In this interactive workshop, strategies for developing the essential characteristics of high performing teams will be the initial focus. Participants will discover that unresolved and poorly handled conflict are key contributors to team breakdown and thus, medical error.   Practical TeamSTEPPS strategies and tools to utilize when conflict threatens the team dynamic will be presented. Key skills will be enhanced through practice simulations.

The workshop will close with a focus on how to empower tomorrow’s leaders to champion the change you wish to happen.  This paradigm shift requires a commitment of time and mentoring of the next generation of team leaders to change the culture and achieve sustained excellence in patient safety.

Who Should Register: There are no requirements in order to attend this pre-conference session. While anyone with a desire to understand the relationship between team dynamics and patient safety is welcome, this is an intermediate level course and participants should have basic working knowledge of TeamSTEPPS tools and concepts. This workshop is particularly suited for those who wish to improve their knowledge and application of TeamSTEPPS tools in resolving conflict that is threatening the team dynamic.
