RACIAL RECKONING IN NURSING
Leading nursing organizations launched the National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing on January 25, 2021. The commission administered a survey to examine the issue of racism among nurses in the workplace between October 7-31, 2021, and 5,623 nurses responded. According to the respondents, racist acts are principally perpetrated by colleagues and those in positions of power. Over half (63%) of nurses surveyed say that they have personally experienced an act of racism in the workplace with the transgressors being either a peer (66%) or a manager or supervisor (60%). Racism affects nurses and the patients they treat. It limits nurses' ability to advance in their profession, treat their patients effectively, and maintain their own health and wellness. The aims of the workshop are to examine racism and bias, both overt and covert acts, and their impact, and to propose recommendations to address racism in nursing.
