Sepsis- Old Wine in a New Bottle

April 4, 2019

Sepsis remains a big problem within US hospitals. The mortality rate is 25-50% and is the third leading cause of death. It is also the most expensive condition treated among all payers and very challenging to diagnose as it is not considered a disease, but rather a syndrome. The diagnosis relies on clinical criteria and clinical judgement; therefore adding additional complexities for an already challenging healthcare environment makes for a perfect storm. There are many controversial discussions around how to make the diagnosis as there is no gold standard test for sepsis. This presentation will highlight the “surviving sepsis campaign” guidelines that were developed for the management of severe sepsis and septic shock.
