Sepsis: Understanding Our Ancient Foe
This talk will discuss the evolution of our intellectual concept of sepsis, beginning with the earliest recorded history and ending with a brief overview of our current understanding of sepsis and present day clinical definitions. The talk will emphasize important historical milestones in surgery, epidemiology, microbiology, and immunology that contributed to our current scientific model. The talk will culminate with a discussion of the presenter’s current sepsis-related research on endothelial barrier function.
