6th Annual Duke Sports Cardiology & Sudden Death in Athletes Symposium- Enduring
The overall goal of the activities of this continuing education (CE) program is to enhance learners’ knowledge and their competency to incorporate evidence-based updates in the care of athletes in order to mitigate their risk for sudden cardiac death (SCD).
Learning Objectives
Review updates in the assessment of athletes for sports participation including ECGs.
Communicate the risks of sudden cardiac death in athletes and contrast these risks to the health benefits of exercise.
Review case presentations of athletes with CV disease. Identify the CV diseases that pose the greatest risk for athletes.
Review the latest epidemiology of SCD in athletes. Evaluate and manage athletes who present with CV symptoms.
Review the CV diseases associated with SCD in both younger and older athletes.
Understand the concerns regarding certain congenital heart disease survivors and their athletic participation
Review evidence and consensus based recommendations on screening athletes.
Integrate evidence and consensus-based screening strategies for CV disease in athletes and understand the pros and cons of including ECG testing in screening algorithms.
Review the unique characteristics of an athlete’s heart and CV tests (imaging, ECG, genetic, and exercise) in athletes.
Understand the unique characteristics of an athlete’s heart—and variations with different sports—in order to be able to select the most appropriate CV testing strategy for athletes with CV symptoms or disease, and interpret the test results.
Review the key elements of defining an exercise program.
Guide athletes and sports trainers on exercise prescription, as well as medications and supplements, in order to minimize risks for SCD.
