Providing medications via an enteral tube is often necessary, but guidance for this method is not an FDA requirement for medication approval. Therefore, there is limited information available for this delivery method. When delivery of a medication via tube requires extemporaneous preparation then it is no longer a licensed medication with possible unanticipated consequences. Health care professionals are challenged daily by complex patients whose medication needs do not fit neatly into use of available products. To provide the right level of care for these patients, professionals have to make complex and rational decisions concerning medications. This presentation will cover general principles of medication administration via enteral feeding tubes, but focus on specific medications based on frequency of use and less common administration challenges.
