This course is intended to be an overview of the Heartmate 2 and 3 ventricular assist devices.

• Review of ventricular assist devices
• Differences in Heartmate 2 and 3 mechanism of action
• Review of device settings
• Review of device preparation and steps for implantation
• Review of steps for a controller change out

Part 3 of the course is an evaluation of learner's didactic knowledge and technical ability

• Attend a hands-on training session which includes:
  • Connect to the Heartmate Touch Module
  • Simulate prep and prime, including driveline connections, backup battery insertion, and syncing of the time and date
  • Turn the pump on
  • Adjust settings (speed, hematocrit etc.)
  • Perform implant checklist
  • Perform controller change out
  • Place the pump in extended silence
  • Turn the pump off

After completing this course, the learner should be able to:

• Locate and review the on-line policy and procedures
• Perform all necessary equipment assembly, priming, operation, and troubleshooting of device
• Able to independently perform controller change out
• Review proper steps and procedures for primary implant, exchange, and explant
• Able to perform any necessary patient teaching required of Perfusionist
• Knows proper documentation of all aspects of procedure relevant to Perfusion Services Department (paper forms and EPIC), as well as patient charges.
