This course is intended to be an overview of the Heartware ventricular assist device.

  • Review of ventricular assist devices
  • Mechanism of action
  • Review of device settings
  • Review of device explantation
  • Review of steps for a controller change out
  • Review of documentation

Part 3 of the course is an evaluation of learner's didactic knowledge and technical ability

  • Attend a hands-on training session which includes:
    • Turn on module and unlock screen
    • Turn the pump on
    • Adjust settings (speed, hematocrit etc.)
    • View alarm tab
    • Perform controller change out
    • Turn the pump off

After completing this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Locate and review the on-line policy and procedures
  • Perform all necessary equipment assembly, operation, and troubleshooting of device
  • Able to independently perform controller change out
  • Review proper steps and procedures for exchange and explant
  • Able to perform any necessary patient teaching required of Perfusionist
  • Knows proper documentation of all aspects of procedure relevant to Perfusion Services Department (paper forms and EPIC), as well as patient charges.
