This course is intended to be an overview of the Heartware ventricular assist device.

- Review of ventricular assist devices
- Mechanism of action
- Review of device settings
- Review of device explantation
- Review of steps for a controller change out
- Review of documentation
Part 3 of the course is an evaluation of learner's didactic knowledge and technical ability
- Attend a hands-on training session which includes:
- Turn on module and unlock screen
- Turn the pump on
- Adjust settings (speed, hematocrit etc.)
- View alarm tab
- Perform controller change out
- Turn the pump off

After completing this course, the learner should be able to:
- Locate and review the on-line policy and procedures
- Perform all necessary equipment assembly, operation, and troubleshooting of device
- Able to independently perform controller change out
- Review proper steps and procedures for exchange and explant
- Able to perform any necessary patient teaching required of Perfusionist
- Knows proper documentation of all aspects of procedure relevant to Perfusion Services Department (paper forms and EPIC), as well as patient charges.
