Objectives:

- Learn about mechanisms of rheumatoid arthritis pathogenesis
- Learn about mechanisms of gout pathogenesis
- Have fun competing against your peers in picking the best "mechanism" (see below for reminder on details)

How to Play Rheumatology Mechanism Madness

1)      Take a bracket (or download from email).

2)      Read the scouting reports for each team.  Additional information about some of the “underdogs” will be presented at grand rounds on 3/26, however attendance at that grand rounds is not required to participate.

3)      For each matchup, choose the team that you think represents the most important pathogenic mechanism for that region’s disease.  For example, in the RA region, decide if the shared epitope is more important than NFkB signaling in RA pathogenesis.  The winner of that matchup then plays FLS tech (fibroblast-like synoviocytes), etc.

4)      In the championship, choose the disease concept that you think is most important in the pathogenesis of disease for its original region.  For example, if you have protein modification from the RA region playing NETosis from the gout region in the championship, you would decide if protein modification in RA is more or less important than NETosis in gout.

5)      The winners of each matchup will be chosen by live voting at grand rounds on 3/26.

6)      Each “win” in the 1st round = 1 point, 2nd round = 2 points, 3rd round = 4 points, and selecting the correct champion = 8 points.

7)      The overall scores will be tabulated after 3/26 and the winner will be announced via email and at a subsequent grand rounds.
