Perinatal adverse outcomes affect women, children, and families and can have lifelong consequences for survivors or lead to premature death. The Safety Program for Perinatal Care builds upon collective knowledge gained from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s  (AHRQ’s) work in the Comprehensive Unit-based Safety Program (CUSP), TeamSTEPPs, safety culture, simulations, and evidence-based interventions.
 

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the rationale for the use of cognitive aids, such as checklists, for reducing errors
  • Identify key safety elements, including the use of checklists,  for four specific situations encountered on labor and delivery (L&D) units
  • Identify ways the key safety elements can be customized for unit procedures for these four situations
  • Describe the role of electronic fetal monitoring for perinatal patient safety
  • Identify the key safety elements related to the use of electronic fetal monitoring
  • Identify ways to apply key safety elements to your unit policies, procedures, and practices related to electronic fetal monitoring
