Objectives: 

  1. Define ventilation, oxygenation, basic anatomy of the lungs, as well as indications for tracheostomy and mechanical ventilation.
  2. Describe external features of a ventilator, common modes of ventilation and associated terminology
  3. Interpret ventilator settings for appropriate patient selection for in-line speaking valve use. 
  4. Describe swallow elevations and interventions for patients on mechanical ventilation.
